Chord Symbols

I'm trying to make sense of the chord symbols to do improv solos and I need help. I happened upon this site and it is terrific. Lots and lots of great stuff. I would love it if you could put chord symbols over a staff and then I could fill them in to see if I am right. Thanks so much and keep up the good work.

I think that'd be pretty manageable -- it's related to the Chord Functions drill I have set up already, but instead of saying "key of C, chord is ImM7" you'd want "build this chord: CmMaj7".

I'll put it on my list. In the meantime, if you run across a website with a definitive list of the chord symbols to learn, that'd be helpful.

Hi, chord symbols should be universal -at least to English speakers, the short-hand type of symbols used by some people, seem to be designed to cause confusion! In my world of 60yrs. of making music, all commercial piano and guitar copies for sale in music shops used almost exclusively exactly the same chord symbols!..........The name of the chord always appeared first Ex.-C, then came what type of chord Ex-Major or minor-(M) or (m) then , whether 7th or 9th or 13th or other type, also in there were other instructions, like for instance whether the chord was Diminished (-) or Augmented (+) So, a symbol signifying the chord of C minor 7th with a flatted 5th would always be written-- Cm7-5.Also for instance, the symbol Cm M7, would mean a C minor chord with the 7th major(B instead of Bb)Bb would be the Dominant 7th, which is another part of harmony theory!that confuses pupils, especially those that don't play piano type instruments

I investigated worldwide harmony proposals -yes it is true- and discovered a new way to think harmony. Finally none of the symbols nowadays used are useful for me. I know, I have a problem. My need is to reflect exactly the note, without enharmonic values. For example, what symbols would you use for this sequence: E-G#-Bb-D, D#-F-G#-B-Db, E-A-C ?
