-------------------------------0--2----- ----------------------0--2--3----------- ----------------1--2-------------------- ----------0--2-------------------------- ----0--2-------------------------------- -0-------------------------------------- E A B D E G# A B C# D E F# \_____SCALE__________/It doesn't matter which note that "scale" starts on, but it does have all 7 letters. You can expand it to the full scale across all 6 strings [see below] but at first you don't need to. To improvise with this scale on the chords you have, simply start a phrase on any note in the current chord. Use any other notes in the scale, but try to end your phrase with a note in the chord (which might be a note in the next chord, or the one after, if your phrase is that long).
-------------------------------------------0--2--4--- ----------------------------------0--2--3----------- ----------------------------1--2-------------------- -------------------0--2--4--------------------------- ----------0--2--4------------------------------------ -0--2--4---------------------------------------------- E F# G# A B C# D E F# G# A B C# D E F# G#As I said above, this set of notes is normally called "the A major scale", but if E is your keynote (not just the lowest note, but the one that "sounds like home", your final note), then "E mixolydian" is a better term.
CAPO SHAPES FOR CHORDS FRET E D A . 2 D C G 4 C Bb F 5 B A E 7 A G D 9 G F CEg, with capo on 4, playing a "C" shape will give you a E chord sound.
