"Circle X" Noteheads

Hey eMusicTheory community,
So in Jazz band (I play electric guitar) we were playing "Celebration" by Kool and The Gang. Anyway I have these strange notes that look like semibreeves but have an x through them. Everybody I have asked has no idea what they mean. My piano teacher suggested that they might mean improvise a muted strumming pattern. I trawled through the internet and found out that they were called "circle x's" according to website which has circles x's. The website provides no meaning for these notes however.
I was wondering if anybody here might no what they mean. I would insert a picture of them but I dont really know how.
Thanks Heaps

Probably indicates strings to be muted while played, creating a percussive effect. Often used in funk music.
