If a song which seems to be in 4/4 but the musical sections of the song are divided into bars of 3 what's the time signature?

I had the impression there would be some musicians on this forum but it seems I was wrong.

Hi there, and Happy Christmas to you.

Can I ask, what do you mean, ‘the musical sections’?

And do you mean each bar has 3 beats, or that the bars are bunched together in groups of 3 bars?

Yes, Merry Xmas and New Year to you as well!

Everything seems like 4/4 but the sections such as verse, pre-chorus, chorus are divided into 3 bars each and not 4 or 2 as you'd expect with a 4/4 song.

Well, the time signature denotes how many, of what type, of beats are there in a bar; it doesn’t say anything about the grouping of the bars themselves. So 4/4 means “four crotchets per bar”.

Grouping bars into sets of 3 or 5 is fine and quite normal. Even grouping whole sets of bars into threes is normal - like Under Pressure by Queen, in which everything seems to be in threes.

It did occur to me that the time sig probably had nothing to do with the arrangement but I wasn't 100 percent sure. Now I know - many thanks.
