Equal temperament, we are told, became necessary in the 1700's to make music of increasing complexity sound "in tune" to the human ear. But the solution of creating 12 equal steps in each scale must have been incredibly hard to do with any reliability or consistency. How did piano tuners, for example, in the 1700's agree which tones to adjust (to temper) and how much temperament was necessary? And how could that be replicated exactly in countless instruments?
